What this tool does

Your primary category is the single highest-leverage field on a Google Business Profile. It determines which searches you are eligible to appear for at all — no amount of content compensates for the wrong one.

The difficulty is that Google’s category list is long, oddly worded, and changes without announcement. The category you want may not exist, and the one that does may be named nothing like your industry.

How to use it

1

Search your business type to see the matching official Google categories.

2

Compare against what the businesses currently ranking in your area have chosen.

3

Set the closest match as primary — specific beats general.

4

Add genuinely applicable secondary categories, and nothing more.

Worth knowing

Choose the most specific category that is genuinely accurate. “Pizza restaurant” outperforms “Restaurant” for pizza searches. But adding categories you do not really serve dilutes relevance and can suppress the ones that matter.

Questions

How many secondary categories should I add?

Only those you genuinely offer. Three accurate ones beat nine speculative ones — irrelevant categories weaken the signal from your primary.

Can I change my primary category later?

Yes, and it usually takes effect within days. Expect ranking movement afterwards, so change one thing at a time and measure.

What if no category fits?

Pick the nearest accurate one and cover the specifics through your services and description instead of forcing a wrong category.
